Wait, who’s watching THE BABY?

Hubs and I have decided that we are going to tile the guest bathroom.  In our 13 year old house, no one has ever thought to pull up the god-awful linoleum and replace it with tile or SOMETHING nicer.  The installation quality was fine, but come on, people, it was UGLY.  We brought little Red to the store with us, and picked out the tile, potty, and all the stuff that goes with it. Here’s Red, happy as can be:

Shopping!! Weeeeeeeee!

So we lugged all the stuff home, our giant toilet cramming in the backseat safely strapped near Red. Once we got home, we had en entirely different problem. With our hands full of demo, mortar, and grout, who was going to watch Red??   Some of the projects (toilet removal and haul to the garage) required two people.  I’m not going to place a little monkey that can roll all the way to Texas alone in a room that’s not yet baby-proof (I’m getting to it!).  But I don’t want to sit him in front of the TV all day, either.

Cue the Jumperoo, Cozy Coupe and Pack n’ Play. Since Red isn’t self standing yet, we were safe putting him in these brilliant contraptions and pulling him into viewing distance while we worked.  Thankfully, our bathroom is near the large hallway and DIRECTLY across from Red’s room, which allowed us to keep an eye on him. So we started.

Linoleum Removal
The demo was FAST – like 30 minutes fast. We watched a ton of videos and read up for weeks before starting our project. Red happily jumped while we worked.  Next was cutting, measuring and laying the tile. This took an entire day.  Poor Hubs, on his birthday, was out in the cold garage, dead of winter, using a wet tile saw.
Meanwhile, I tried to measure all the tile while Red screamed at me to not leave his sight.  Or hold him.  Or sing to him.  Or feed him.  Or change him.  Or something else.
It was really hard keeping Red entertained while we got stuff done.  Hubs and I agreed that we never wanted to plop him in front of the TV as a babysitter, so I was left to keep him working animals, books, toys, etc.  [Admittedly, I did sit him to watch The Muppets when we had potty breaks or needed to carry stuff from room to room. Total: nearly 30 minutes overall.  I still feel guilty about it. ]
He did really well! We laid the tile, and finished for the day.

Even Dooley, our big English Bulldog, played supervisor.  I think he was highly unimpressed with our efforts, seeing as he would rather play speed-bump in the hallway or nap the afternoon away.  In our bed………
The next day, Saturday, was mortaring day.  Messy stuff, mortar.  But even as sticky as it is, it still cleans up easier than poop. Now that I think about it, most things do.  (That’s a plus!)  Hubs and I took turns, this time, mortaring the tile and dancing with Red in the living room.  Then, POOF! It was done. The tile was in with the spacers.
Next we tackle the grout. Another, wet, sticky mess.  That requires a LOT of hands.  But wait, WHO’S GOING TO WATCH RED????

Sounds like you’ve done great so far! Lol If your ever in a bind though, try asking a family member to take him for a few hours or even just come over and keep him entertained while you work. Good luck!
