Cindy Lou Who Costume from The Grinch

She was no more than two, but she knew what to do! This Cindy Lou Who costume featuring Cindy’s classic pink dress is an easy one to whip up for Dr. Seuss Day, or Halloween! Or a random Tuesday in November, if you happen to be Scarlett. Early in the winter season, she got it into her head that she wanted a Cindy Lou Who dress. The moment I said I would make her one, Scarlett started tossing off her socks, shoes and hoodie; I had to explain that first, we needed to go buy fabric before I could give it to her! But a few weeks later, I had the Cindy Lou Who Costume ready to go, complete with pipe cleaner antennae and red hair bows. She was so happy!

The costume was based off an old pattern I had stashed away in a drawer. A bodice, puffed sleeves and a gathered neckline were what I wanted to feature. The rest of the dress (hemline, etc) I designed on the fly to look like Cindy Lou Who. I can hear my grad school department rolling over at the lack of planning a design! The soft pink fabric is a stretchy poly blend knit, which is great for a little kid craving comfort.

I left the hemline of the dress long, in order to create a ruffle as well as a channel to gather the dress. At first, I thought of adding horsehair to make the dress bubble out at the knee, but a 3-year-old is too wiggly for that much structure, so I cut the dress wide and gathered some elastic into the ankle-height channel. The end result is wide enough to run and play, but narrow enough to create the visual illusion of a gather!

The sleeves I kept at 3/4 length for a busy kiddo who colors, plays and eats all the time. It’s much more suited to her activity level than a stainable full-length sleeve. You can make your dress any way you like! The back has a 14″ zipper to allow her in and out of the dress, and all of the gathers are releasable when she grows. It’s something the whos would be happy to hear.

Grinch Disneybound

Ready for a Grinch-inspired outfit instead of a Cindy Lou Who Costume? Grab a Max plushie and don a green shirt. Red’s grinchy number was a Target purchase from a few years ago. Bonus points for heading to Target in your getup and grabbing a copy of the classic tale on DVD, digital or even the very text it was inspired by.

Dr. Suess’ The GRINCH on DVD

Our family rushed to the movie theatre after Thanksgiving 2019 to see the newest iteration of The Grinch. The kids loved the new jokes, the old tale and of course, the style of animation, which perfectly captured the proportions of The Grinch. The reindeer were a cute addition, too! You can grab your copy of The Grinch on DVD or Blu Ray on Tuesday, February 5, 2019. It’s rated PG for brief rude humor, but nothing I wouldn’t allow my kiddos to see.

Illumination and Universal Pictures present The Grinch, based on Dr. Seuss’ beloved classic. The Grinch tells the story of a cynical grump who goes on a mission to steal Christmas, only to have his heart changed by a young girl’s generous spirit. Funny, heartwarming and visually stunning, The Grinch is fun for the whole family! Starring the vocal talents of Benedict Cumberbatch, Rashida Jones, Kenan Thompson, Cameron Seely. With Angela Lansbury and Pharrell Williams.

Good evening. I am needing a Cindy Lou Who night gown for a pageant for outfit of choice. I am not a seamstress by any means I don’t even know how to sew on a button LOL and I was wondering if I sent you all the measurements with the heighth and everything if I could purchase this costume from you or pay you to make another one just like this. My daughter is 1 + 1/2 and she only weighs 18 lb and she’s 25 in tall so I’m not sure if your daughter’s costume would fit her. Would you be willing or even consider making one to fit my daughter and I will pay you whatever you charge we have looked everywhere and have not found none any that fit her or that look as good as yours. All i need is the gown my aunt can make all the other accessories.
