Date Night Idea: Glassblowing

Date night came around fast this time! Continuing on our challenge of planning date nights once a month, doing something our SPOUSE wanted to do, Chase’s plan was top-notch. Keeping the date details a secret until we were on our way, he finally released that he had planned a glass blowing lesson for two at Decatur Glass Blowing! For past date night ideas, we painted, golfed and visited a speakeasy, so this new HOT skill was really exciting! Date Night Idea: Glassblowing Class in Atlanta, GA | Redheadbabymama.com

Out lesson at Decatur blowing started with Lee, who showed us around the shop, making sure we thoroughly understood all safety protocols, had on correct footwear, and knew what to assume was always a hot surface in the shop.Date Night Idea: Glassblowing Class in Atlanta, GA | Redheadbabymama.com

But what would we make? Would I be any good at this quick-moving, blazing fire, balance-based art form? It turns out, glass blowing is a lot like pottery, but hands off (of course!) and takes a lot of understanding of an amorphous blob. I tried my hand at throwing a glass flower and was surprised how incredibly hot just the “warmer” was, not to mention the molten glass in the 2000+ furnace.

In just a few minutes, I had a flower already in the “cooler” which was a toasty 1000 degrees, slowing the cool down so the glass wouldn’t break. Chase did much better with his flower, and we both made very pretty paperweights, which helped us learn how to use the wooden block. Make sure to watch the video to see how lava-hot the glass actually was!

And I would be remiss if I didn’t thank my fellow photographer, Chase, for helping me capture all the footage and photos from our date.  It’s hard to focus on a molten ball of glass, glowing red-hot!Date Night Idea: Glassblowing Class in Atlanta, GA | Redheadbabymama.com

After glass blowing, he took me for a southern comfort food dinner, which is totally my favorite. I stuffed myself silly and enjoyed a cocktail before heading home to snuggle in, and dream of all the new glass creations we could make!

This was so much fun, and I highly recommend getting your significant other out for a glass blowing session. Thanks, babe, for the great date night idea!  Have you ever blown or thrown glass before? I have so much more appreciation for the patterns, clarity and hard-to-make shapes!  EDIT: Decatur Glassblowing was so happy that we loved our class, they want to offer YOU 10% off a class! Use promotional code REDHEAD on the site. This will be good for any class to be booked through the website (Zozi booking system) until DEC 31, 2017.
