I remember when I found out we were having a boy. I didn’t know what to do. Being a girl, I knew what girls liked, how to interact with them, and playing (and being TOTALLY into) with turtles, LEGOs and trucks seemed so foreign to me. But, I’m here to report that I’m so into being a boy mom. It lets me have awesome mornings like the one we had this weekend: we met a Stormtrooper! Red and I were guests of the Disney Channel and attended a screening for Star Wars: Rebels and the premiere special airing on Disney XD. The 60 minute special lays out the plot for the new series, which (much like Clone Wars) takes place a Long Time Ago, In A Galaxy Far, Far Away….
(Official Info from the Disney Channel) The unlikely band of heroes emerges to renew the fight for freedom. The story unfolds during a dark time when the evil Empire is tightening its grip of power on the galaxy. Imperial forces have occupied a remote planet and are ruining the lives of its people. The motley but clever crew of the starship Ghost — cowboy Jedi Kanan, ace pilot Hera, street-smart teenager Ezra, the “muscle” Zeb, explosives expert Sabine, & cantankerous old astromech droid Chopper — is among a select few who are brave enough to stand against the Empire. Together, they will face threatening new villains, encounter colorful adversaries, embark on thrilling adventures and become heroes with the power to ignite a rebellion.
Needless to say, when Red saw these bad guys in white, he thought they were robots. I quickly taught him to say, “Stormtrooper” and he was amazed. These “bad guys” guys were so nice, posing for photos, giving hugs and getting some high fives. I was impressed with the level of activities and character greetings before the screening. With custom balloon light sabers, face painting, coloring, photos, and character greetings (there were 4 characters in all) we stayed busy until it was time for the movie.
Not to be outdone, I made sure to one-up Hubs’ face tattoo session and got Red a stormtrooper tattoo and asked the lady NOT to put a red X over it like she did the other. We like a little dark side now and then! Our favorite storm trooper made sure to pop into the photo and Red wanted so badly to turn and see him.
Check out that sweet tattoo! Thumbs up approval from the resident stormtrooper!
At first invitation, I was surprised to see that this series has a G rating. I was sure that the lasers, explosions, and fighting would be too much for little kids, but after seeing the special, I feel comfortable watching the Star Wars: Rebel episodes with Red. The good guys are careful, resourceful, and do the right thing. I know we’ll be tuning in to watch the premiere special when it airs on the Disney Channel, and I’m sure once Hubs sees it, the Disney XD series will be a regular on our DVR. Strangely enough, watching the series, rooting for good guys, and fighting with balloon light sabers comes naturally to me now. I’m so happy and fulfilled being the mom of a boy!
The 60 minute STAR WARS REBELS: SPARK OF REBELLION special airs on the on Disney Channel on October 3rd (9PM ET) and the “Star Wars Rebels” series begins October 13th (9PM ET) on Disney XD. The STAR WARS REBELS: SPARK OF REBELLION DVD will be available on October 14. And grab a custom balloon light saber while you watch the movie. It makes me more special! 🙂
