I straight up get eaten, that’s what happens. I’m the mosquito BAIT for the rest of my family, especially when I’m not wearing bug spray. When we moved to our new home last year, we sprayed for pests and outdoor biters, but we also have a little creek in the far corner of the yard (where the goats ate all our weeds!), which means if I’m not wearing bug spray, I look like a veritable smorgasboard to those little devils. And I’m an itcher, and a terrible healer so pass the band-aids, please. š
We had some friends over for Memorial Day this year, and I think aside from a birthday or family, it was our first real cookout in years. I made sure we had grilled chicken stocked, and some good friends brought sides, desserts and even some bevvies. Oh and the kids! We had at 8 kids running/crawling around the backyard playing with bubbles, chalk, bocce ball and playing hide and seek among the many bushes.
So what do you think I pulled out? Yup. Bug spray. Oh, and sunscreen. It worries me when I have sunscreen or bug spray with oodles of chemicals, especially when I’m handing Scarlett, or putting some on her for her own protection. With the big kids, I worry less, but we all want what’s good for us as well as the environment.
Buzz Away Extreme sent me a few samples of their product, which is an all-natural insect repellant made with essential plant oils that delivers the same protection as many chemical DEET-based repellents, without the negative effects on individual health and the environment. I had a little bottle of the spray to try out, and I stuck those handy kid-friendly wipes in my diaper bag for trips to the park or a friend’s house. I’d rather spray myself down than scratch myself into a giant band-aid. It smelled really nice and worked even better – not a bite to be had. (Grateful!!!) And nope, there were no black flies, either… not even on my snacks outside.
So off we went – instead of venturing out to a park (find a national wildlife refuge near you!) or climbing Kennesaw Mountain, we stayed home for the Memorial Day fun. Just look what a bunch of awesome goofballs we gathered. Can you spot the baby?
The kids were amazing, Loud, running, snacking bundles of joy that made beautiful art on our patio, ran the bubble machine until we ran out of bubbles and climbed and played themselves to death. Red had a HUGE nap after the fun was over; it’s safe to say that he really enjoyed playing with all the girls.
Here’s most of the bunch stationed for cookie-eating on our southern-style covered deck. Oh and that great big lug at the top of the stairs joined the fun for this photo that Meghan took!
Yes, this is Red playing bocce ball. In a cape. Wearing Christmas socks. I let the kid dress himself most days, and it’s sometimes a surprise what he picks out – but hey, he did it himself! And you better believe I’m spraying him down and lathering him up. I’m all about the natural options this summer. Going green a little bit at a time!
