No, we didn’t pay tuppence a bag (Mary Poppins), but we did bring shelled unsalted nuts to share with the little creatures.
The South Carolina State House was built in 1851, and was rebuilt after Sherman set fire and cannonballs against in during the War Between the States. The state congress still resides here. Gardens surround the building on each side, with classic benches and state funded historical statues. When I was a little girl, Mom would take me there to feed the squirrels. Back then they were so tame, you can let them eat out of your hand!
As you can imagine, A LOT of squirrels moved in, and they tried to get “rid” of them. But, if you show up with some unsalted nuts and a little patience, you will see everything from pigeons, bluebirds, jays, cardinals, squirrels and wrens come your way for a snack. Red learned how to toss them a nut, and clapped when the birds ate them. And then he took some for himself as a snack…
