It’s hard not to love summer; between beach vacations, neighborhood cookouts and pool parties, there are dozens of opportunities to enjoy good company and great summer food. And while a diet of cheeseburgers and waffle cones probably sounds great in theory, your stomach will probably thank you if you go for slightly healthier choices every once in a while. To keep yourself feeling great this summer without missing out on yummy treats, try out the following delicious and healthier summer food substitutions:
• Homemade Chips
Once you pop open that bag of potato chips, it can be pretty easy to go through most of the bag before you even realize what you’re doing! For a guilt-free, lighter chip option, try baking thin slices of potato in the oven with olive oil, salt and pepper. Or, make it even healthier with homemade kale chips; they’ve got the same addictive crunch as regular chips.
• Sweet Potato Fries (these are a Redhead House Favorite!)
Burgers and fries are a classic combination, but too many deep fried potatoes aren’t great for anyone. To get your fill of yummy French fries this summer in a better-for-you way, bake your own sweet potato fries before your next barbecue. Sweet potatoes are full of vitamins and nutrients that baking potatoes don’t have, plus, they’ll add a gorgeous pop of color to your plate! They’re also a great way to introduce kids to new types of produce.
• Fruit Popsicles
It’s always tempting to order the triple scoop sundae at the ice cream store, but it’s certainly not the healthiest option. Try fruit popsicles for a more nutritious frozen option this summer; they’re just as refreshing as ice cream but much better for you. Plus, kids will love that they can help make them at home (but not as much as they’ll love eating them!).
• Leaner Burgers and Dogs
It’s unrealistic to avoid hot dogs and burgers all summer; they’re just too good not to eat! Luckily there are plenty of healthier options out there that both kids and adults can enjoy— choose turkey burgers or chicken hot dogs instead of higher-fat all-beef products, and stick them on whole grain buns. Pile on the ketchup, mustard and relish and kids won’t even know the difference!
It’s easy to eat well this summer with just a few simple substitutions. Happy grilling!
