Homemade Fajita Seasoning and “Oven Fajitas!”

There are a lot of things I can’t make at home… that lovely ranch dressing mix (I’m terrible at it!), properly cooked acorn squash or a REAL dole whip.  But, when it comes to seasonings, my hand is getting much better at balancing spices and getting my homemade on.  This week, when “taco Tuesday” came around, we decided to make our beloved oven fajitas, which take nearly no effort and are smack-your-mama good.  But when we forgot to get the easy-fajita-mix at the store, it was no sweat to mix up my own concoction.  Homemade Fajita seasoning is easier than you think!

Homemade Fajita Seasoning

First, start raiding your pantry for spices.  I actually had each of these on hand, courtesy of my attempts to make homemade BBQ sauce, taco seasoning and other family staples.  I may or may not have left out the Cayenne….. I just can’t take all the heat! 🙂

Homemade Fajita Seasoning

DIY your own mix instead of the store filler
Prep Time10 mins
Cook Time1 min
Course: Main Course
Cuisine: Mexican
Servings: 6

Equipment

  • measuring spoons
  • small bowl

Ingredients

  • 1 Tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 tsp Cumin
  • 1 tsp Paprika
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper

Instructions

  • Mix ingredients together and sprinkle generously onto your chicken, steak or chosen fajita item. Cook as directed.

If you want to try your hand at making Oven Fajitas, it’s VERY simple.  For our family, I cut us three bell peppers into strips, sliced one Vidalia onion into rings, and chunked-up raw chicken in a glass 9×13 pan.

Next, I spread the homemade fajita seasoning (I mixed it together well, first!) over the fajita ingredients evenly.

Lastly, top generously with olive oil, and turn to combine.  Stick it in the oven for 40-45 minutes at 400 degrees, and you will have perfectly cooked, roasted oven fajitas for your whole family.  The recipe doubles easily for a larger group or a dinner party.

I don’t actually have a finished photo of the meal at the point… because we dug in right away!  And then Chase ate the leftovers.  Granted, I didn’t tell him that I needed his lunch to star in a photo session, so that’s my fault.  🙂  If you try the homemade fajita seasoning, let me know how you like it; it’s fresh, easy and something you can make at home!

I never make my own seasoning and really should because awful things like MSG give me migraines. I’m going to give this one a go!

Thanks so much for sharing this. I love fajitas, but I’ve never actually made my own fajita seasoning. I never even knew what was in it!

Those look so good. I love to make my own seasonings. They’re cheaper and I never have to worry about being out of them! Thanks for the recipe.

I can’t take the heat either! I usually half or quarter the amount of cayenne recipes call for. I’ve also been told by my family that red pepper flakes are no longer allowed in our spice mixes…lol. Seems they can’t take the heat either!

Homemade fajita seasoning is a great idea, especially since the packaged varieties always contain so much salt. I love this easy recipe too!

Sometimes it’s too tempting to wait. The fajitas look like they’re going to be awesome. I love making my own seasonings, so I can’t wait to give this one a try.

We make our own fajita seasoning here and I think homemade is definitely better than the package variety! I never thought about making fajitas in the oven, but I’m going to have to try it!!!

I have the stuff out to make chicken fajitas tonight, but I’m going to try them this way. I usually just put a pack of fajita mix and chicken in the crock pot, but your way looks so much better.

This is genius and I’ll definitely be making it for my family. My kids love fajitas but I’ve never made them at home because I don’t have a fajita pan! Problem solved.
