How to Cut Flank or Skirt Steak

I like to think that I’m learning to be a good cook.  I’ll never be perfect, and I can use some pointers from time to time.  That being the case, I used to shy away from serving flank or skirt steak because I thought it was too tough.  I didn’t know how to prepare this super cheap, yummy cut of beef, but I learned! Here are a few tips on how to cut your flank and skirt steaks so they’re super tender.
First, you need to marinate the cut, even if it’s just for 30 minutes.  A tenderizing mixture of soy, garlic combined with cutting across the grain (see photo below) means you’ll have a delectable dinner your family will love! For more recipes like this, you can check out eMeals.  I’m an affiliate, so if you want to use one of my links to purchase a plan (we use the Clean Eating Meal Plan) I’ll get a few cents.  Next, try your hand at the recipe below featuring Parmesan Broccoli Twice Baked Potatoes to set off your flank steak into the perfect meal!
Learn how to cut flank steak or skirt steak. Cut against the grain and it's tasty!
Now that you’re a pro with cutting Flank Steak, try this AWESOME recipe from eMeals for Marinated Flank Steak and Parmesan/Broccoli Twice Baked Potatoes.  From start to finish it’s 90 minutes, but there’s some serious down time while your potatoes bake.  My family was impressed, and that made me feel SO good!
Marinated Flank Steak and
Parmesan Broccoli Twice Baked Potatoes
(this recipe serves 2 people, easily doubles or triples!)
Ingredients:
Marinated Flank Steak:
1⁄2 cup low-sodium soy sauce
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons honey
1⁄2 teaspoon crushed red pepper
3⁄4 lb flank steak
1⁄4 teaspoon salt, 1⁄4 teaspoon black pepper

Twice Baked Potatoes:
1 large baking potato
1⁄2 cup chopped fresh broccoli
1⁄4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons reduced-fat sour cream
1 tablespoon butter
1⁄4 teaspoon salt, 1⁄4 teaspoon black pepper

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.  Pierce potatoes several times with a fork, rub potatoes lightly with EVOO and place in oven for 60 minutes.

2. Combine soy sauce, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, honey, and crushed red pepper in a large zip-top plastic freezer bag; add steak.  Seal bag, and marinate 1 hour as the potatoes bake.
3. Meanwhile, bring 1⁄2 cup water and broccoli to a boil in a saucepan; steam 4 minutes or until tender. Drain. Chop finely and set aside.
4.  Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Sprinkle steak with salt and pepper; grill 7 to 8 minutes per side or to desired degree of doneness. Let rest 10 minutes before slicing (as the finished potato shells bake).
5.  When potatoes are done, remove from oven (HOT!!) and cut potato in half lengthwise.  Scoop potato pulp from halves into a bowl, leaving 1⁄4-inch shell. Stir together potato pulp, broccoli, cheese, sour cream, butter, salt, and pepper; spoon into potato shells. Place on an aluminum foil-lined rimmed baking sheet; bake 10 minutes or until browned.

Serve and Enjoy!  Be sure to let me know if you try the Clean Eating meals. We love how eMeals makes dinner easy to plan, shop for and cook! Use promo code SCHOOL for 20% off your meal plan!

I must make those potatoes! MAN do they look delicious. Everything about this meal makes me hungry and it’s almost midnight! These are great tips on how to cut a steak. I admit I am an amateur in that area.

I’ve heard that term “against the grain” on the Food Network. It makes sense with your close up pictures. Btw, your food looks delish!!

My ex hubby taught me that, and it works like a charm. That’s what I use for fajitas. 🙂

I always have a hard time remembering this. it seems so natural to just cut with it, but that’s not how it works.

I’ve learned that cooking a steak in a cast iron skillet in the oven on broil makes a perfect steak every time. Just like eating out. And, you can buy the cheaper cuts without worry. Hubs and I do this every time. I have a lot of recipes on my website but our go to is no salt seasoning, lemon juice and Worcestershire sauce.

Superb blog! Do you have any hints for aspiring writers? I’m hoping to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost
on everything. Would you advise starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there
that I’m completely overwhelmed .. Any suggestions? Thank you!

I was on blogger for three years – it’s free and allows you to run ads, but a little harder to migrate to WP, which is where you can get serious about it. The bad thing about the free version of WP is that you can’t run ads or make any revenue. It’s up to you where you want to start! Good luck!
