There’s no need to install a boring storage cubby into your kid’s room. Use these tips to keep it fun and make a personalized storage unit that better fits your child.

Acrylic Paint

Acrylic paint is the perfect go-to for personalizing cubbies for your child. The sky is the limit: If you can paint it, you can put it on a cubby. Take an old fabric cubby that could use a little freshening up and completely refurbish it with vibrant colors and designs. Or, go simple with your child’s name or a few swipes of paint to create a rainbow across the corner of a brightly colored container.

Iron-Ons

If the storage cubby is made of a fabric, you can add iron-ons to the front for a whimsical touch. You can find these at most craft stores and in the arts aisles of many department stores. Go old school with a superhero or vintage design, or choose your child’s favorite character.

Buttons

If you are like most families, there is a box of random buttons in your home, lost from shirts, dresses, coats and any other type of clothing to ever enter your house. Choose buttons to sew to the storage cubby in either random designs or to spell out a name. Drop by a craft or fabric store and pick up a few sparkly or wildly colored ones for an extra touch of fun.

Luggage Tags

These can be picked up for a minimal price and can adorn the cubbies in a classic manner while also offering function. Use the “contact info” window to create nicely printed labels for each cubby for better organization.

Fabric

Choose scraps of material with fuzzy textures, vibrant colors and crazy designs and attach them to the cubby’s front with thick, bright stitching. Cut out shapes or letters, or let your child cut his or her own to add an extra bit of their personality to the project. Stop by a fabric store and you will likely find a highly reduced section of scraps that are ideal for this particular project.

Adhesives

You can find just about any type of material with an adhesive back if you scan the craft store aisles. Patches, fabric and wooden shapes are just a few of your options. To personalize a storage space for a child with an especially sparkly personality, pick up a bag of adhesive jewels and go to town bedazzling the cubby with light catching twinkles.

Having storage in a room doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun. Let your child’s character shine with creative personalization on their cubbies.
