We did it! Our family trekked up to Athens, GA for the weekend to experience UGA Homecoming as a family of four. I think Chase was really more excited than he let on to have all of us on campus together, decked out in red and black, with football in the air. I used to be a tailgating fanatic, but as soon as Red was born, I retreated to the sofa as an armchair quarterback. I preferred the safety of home with everything at my fingertips, not wanting to languish in the cool fall air with an infant. This time, with Scarlett being so small, we secured an on-campus hotel room! That meant we could tailgate, enjoy downtown Athens and while the boys crammed popcorn and rooted the team on in-person, Scarlett and I happily watched on the big-screen between the sheets.
Our pre-game festivities were a lot of fun. BBQ (a Southern staple), music and lots of tailgate chairs. Maybe in a couple of years we can re-instate our family tailgate with a new tent and snacks of our own. In the meantime, we’re happy to pop from tent to tent and visit our friends. After all, don’t I need to showcase Scarlett’s little tutu UGA onesie?
The boys especially enjoyed the “Dawg Walk” again, where the band, cheerleaders and our Dawg mascots lead the team into the locker room to prepare for the big match between the hedges.
The day flew by so fast, I was happy to have one of Chase’s fraternity brothers snap this family shot for me to keep. I hope we look back on it one day and marvel at how small the kids were. And who knows, I’ll probably gawk at my haircut in 30 years. 🙂
The next morning, we had the luxury of a lazy morning, traipsing around downtown for breakfast, coffee and plenty of sightseeing on North Campus. Even though we live in Atlanta, really good UGA merchandise and clothing can be hard to come by. I’m not talking about the t-shirts or hats you can get at Walmart and Target (which are all fine and well); I’m talking about the embroidered pants, the Columbia safari shirts and the extremely cute kids collection. We stocked up on the next few year’s items like Red’s sweatshirt.
Do you have a favorite football team? The south is known for their love of college football. Leave me a note telling me about your favorite team and how you tailgate!
