Pinterest Project: Jelly Jar Luminaries

Pinterest is a horrible website that will trap you for hours looking at creative and pretty things.  It makes you feel so creative and fancy, but when you leave the computer, you’re right back where you started – in your oatmeal room with your oatmeal style. Blerg.
So, I’ve been trying to copy some Pinterest projects around my house in order to make myself actually feel fancy and creative.  If you follow me on Pinterest, I’ve got lots of fun things pinned up, and some of them are my own!
I saw this photo of jar luminaries and had to try it for myself. I had in my recycling at the moment: Spaghetti jar, jelly jar, and baby food jar.  Perfect for a start. I also grabbed small cans of spray paint: white and silver metallic, leftover ric rac and trims.
First, I went to a part of the yard where there weren’t any grass weeds and laid down my lids with a few coats of spray paint.
Next, I scotch taped the end of my trim into the mouth of the jar.
After winding the trim in a random pattern around the jar, I taped it to the bottom.  You can use yarn, trim, lace, anything you have lying around.  Leftover gift wrap ribbon will work, too!
After your trim is secured, spray you jars white with a thin coat of paint.  If you put a thick coat down, less light will show – it’s up to you!
After the paint has dried, remove the trim from the jars.  I’ll add a little sand and a tealight for those evenings on the patio.  The lace trim didn’t really show any lace detail, but more of a soft fade.  I loved the ric rac, and I think I’ll try another one with yarn when I get my hands on the next soup jar.
The lids are really handy to keep all the weather and yard crud from the jars when they are not in use.
I have no doubt that these would photograph much lovelier in the dark evening, but I have yet to get out there as it’s been raining cats and dogs at night. So, hopefully this weekend I can get some good shots.  Insomnia was this post’s friend. I got a nighttime shot at 2:30am, ’cause, hey; who needs sleep?
Perhaps I ought not have waited for quite so dark a time… but these were so beautiful in the middle of the night.

One of these days I will finally do a Pinterest project! The only thing I’ve done are some (meaning one or two dishes) and got ideas for LOs bday party!
