Review: The Fisher Price Jumperoo Luv U Zoo Design

This is an independent review of the Fisher-Price Jumperoo in the Luv U Zoo pattern.  Available at a number of stores and online.  **No company provided product**
After taking some photos for this post, I now know how hard it is to nicely photograph a jumpy, squirmy little giant baby in low light.  I tried to get Red from a few different angles. The photo session ended up taking 15 minutes and it should have only taken 5. The photos that survive are the least blurry of the pictures.  Enjoy!

One of the great toys/gear that our family has enjoyed has been the jumperoo. Red takes to jumping in our hands and lap because he has enjoyed being in it so much.  He’s so much like a stationary (for now) kangaroo, people have commented, “Wow, he jumps a lot, doesn’t he?”.  Yes, thank you, person.  I just now noticed that…

When Red was about 4 months old, my wonderful parents bought him a jumperoo. He was rapidly outgrowing the swing. (In all honesty, by 4 months, Red was so big the swing was now a paper weight in the living room due to the fact that he was so hefty, it didn’t have enough power to work under his Hulk-like frame).  Here is a pic from when Red was 4m old, and it was the first time in the jumperoo. I often put a soft hand towel behind him to steady his head and back while he learned support.
Red at 4 months
An older, wiser, LARGER, more experienced Red at 8.5 months.
When I pulled this sucker out of the box, there were A LOT of parts.  But if was fairly easy to put together, with illustrated instructions.  I got it set up myself in about 10 minutes, and that was after I put a toy in the wrong spot, and had to pry it back out with a screwdriver.  User error.  It has a fairly large footprint, and it doesn’t go through doors at all. So where you set it up is where it stays, unless you detach a foot to help it through a doorway.

That being said, the jumperoo has a lot of nifty and thoughtful features to help Mama and Daddy, like the adjustable height function.  The brown straps have reinforced levels.  Underneath the unit, the heavy duty levers snap out with hefty effort to adjust the height.  This helps Red keeps jumping through his growth spurts.
We’re on level 2 now, and you can see
level 3 above, waiting to be used.

I also like the fact that the toy centers snap on. If one breaks, I found multiple replacements on Ebay for the thrifty shopper.

The green leaves are articulated to allow for jumping movement.
At first I worried it would snap, but it’s holding strong
despite the visual lightening of the plastic color.

For the ear sensitive parent (read: I don’t like toys with batteries…..), there are two sound functions: one that runs incessantly so that you want to jump off a cliff, and the other responds to his movements only.  I use the second, on the lower volume level. But it really did help Red learn to jump.  Two little flower-shaped lights flicker with movement, also stimulating his eyes.

The seat portion of the jumperoo comes off to allow for machine washing.  With a drooly baby, this is helpful. It’s a little bit “scoopy” for the butt. Less dangle of legs and more seat-like. There’s some talk out there that dangly baby legs can cause hip problems.  Even if it doesn’t (in the long run), I like knowing that he has more of a “scoopy” seat.

A teether is attached to one of the corners.  It’s lion-shaped and has a cutout that allows little hands to grip it comfortably.  It’s made of plastic, and a little jellyish to the touch.  The only problems is that the lanyard attaching it is quite short. You can see Red below extending it to the max while trying to lick it.  At the same time, when it falls overboard, it’s difficult for him to retrieve.  So that’s most likely why they made if short. Eh, what can you do?  As far as the design goes, I think it’s awful cute. Not that I put too much stock in matchy-matchy-ness for toys, but I did get the swing from this collection, as well.  The Lov U Zoo collection is nicely gender un-biased. It would do well for boys or girls.
Red can really work the springs on this thing. We recently moved it up a level because it was nearly bottoming out in it, due to his height and the slamming down after his jump.  He’s so strong that he can extend the springs completely so that you wha-BAM! wha-BAM! coming from the living room.  But the jumperoo still stands and takes a pounding without faltering.

Overall, I really do like this product a lot. I would most certainly purchase it again.  After Red out grows it, I plan either to loan it to another new Mama or dismantle the large pieces, and wrap it up in the attic for another baby lifetime (that’s an entirely different discussion).
