The 2013 Tony Award-winning Broadway musical will play at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre for a short engagement during November 3-8 as part of the Broadway in Atlanta Series. The new book by Douglas Carter Beane really is different. It uses much of the original book by Oscar Hammerstein II and adds new characters, various plot differences and magical transformations to keep you interested. While I appreciated the modern jokes and dialogue, I couldn’t help but be nostalgic for the classic script and roles that we know so well from the 1957 Julie Andrews version.
The new take on the beloved story combines the story’s classic elements – glass slippers, pumpkin, and a beautiful ball, but with some surprising twists. Cinderella is now a contemporary figure living in a fairytale setting, with lots of spirit, soul and doesn’t let her rags or her gowns trip her up in her quest for kindness and forgiveness. She actually inspires all around her to both be kind AND fight for what’s right. I think it’s worth taking your family to enjoy the classic music and expose your children for the wonderful morals Cinderella always teaches us.
RODGERS+HAMMERSTEIN’S CINDERELLA will play in Atlanta at the Fox Theatre November 3-8 with showtimes of: Tuesday-Thursday at 7:30 p.m, Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., as well as two Sunday showings of 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
