As you may know from a previous post, (It will happen eventually, won’t it?), I have a little anxiety over the sippy cup issue. I’m not really sure why. Other savvy Mamas have mentioned to me that the sippy cup at this age is merely a toy on the tray; that we can have a few more months with the bottle and it’s no big deal.
I could look at the issue in an anti-anxiety light; seeing that his baby-hood is a beautiful thing and to carpe diem the entire thing before it’s gone. Don’t get me wrong, I’m enjoying every minute of it (poops and all), but I think I have to follow my intuition at least some of the time. Like I tell Hubs: If you’re partially a pessimist, then you’re never disappointed with the outcome.
Mom sent me a few sippy cups to try out, which I took as a cue to try again. Red has been using the Tommee Tippee bottles, and they have been wonderful. They are short enough to fit into small diaper bag spaces, wide enough to easily clean and run through the dishwasher, BPA free, and inexpensive to replace the nipples and we grew into faster flows. In short, they have been perfect for our family. We have 7 of them – one in the diaper bag, 6 in the fridge for use during the day. They even have a little valve to let air in and prevent more air in the baby. Awesomeness.

Over dinner with Red, I decided to give the sippy cup another try. But this time I used the new ones. As you can see from above, the Tommee Tippee bottles have a very distinct shape – hourglass body, silicone nipple and a ring around the threads. The new sippy cup is by the Nuby company. It’s from their new “Natural Touch” line – available here. (I completely forgot to take a photo when it was still packaged).
Mom got these at Marshalls. I love a good bargain, but it makes it so hard to find these items again when Red loves them. But here we are again. Darn it, Mom, stop finding such good stuff!! If these are a hit with Red, then I’ll have to hunt and peck to find more of them. No luck at first glance on the BabiesRUs website.
Here is a photo of the packaging back – she got 2 cups for about $9. Nice. 🙂 There are a few pieces that came with these puppies. Printed cup (I got two blue designs), collar ring, silicone nipple, and shield for the top. The best thing about this cup is that it’s truly spillproof. To drink from the cup, Red has to either suck, or gently bit the nipple, allowing the milk to flow at his speed. Which I like.
The collar’s handles are slim enough for him to grip. And fling the cup all over the highchair tray. And drop on the floor. But that’s another issue for another day. They are gently contoured to help him grab it, too. The nipple has a valve, too, just like the Tommee Tippee nipples.
The hourglass shape of the Nuby cups, as well as the see-through look, is attractive to Red, in that they look similar to the Tommee Tippee bottles. I think Nuby has a good product. But on to the issue at hand; Red’s willingness to drink from one.
I filled one up with warm milk, and offered it at the usual time during dinner. He saw the shape, milk, and reached for it. So I went in for the kill. Helped it to his lips. He paused. Looked up, like, WTH, MOM. I tried again with a giant smile on my face, making all sorts of silly, “Mmmmmm” noises.
He tried again, and thanks to his third tooth coming in, bit down, causing a gush of milk to come out. The baby was pleased. It was good. He took the cup in his own hands, and instead of sucking, proceeded to bite down and drink from the cup. It was very messy going, as he learned the new flow, but he managed to get 5 out of 7 ounces down his gullet. The Mama was pleased. It was good.

YUSSS!!! Drunk. |
So now, I figure out when to offer the sippy cup (meals) and when to offer the bottle (in the middle of the night when I’m strapped for sleep) and find the happy medium. It will be a long road to sippy-cup-dom, but I’m traveling with a very happy camper. It’s good.
Could I find this one at BRU or target? I’d like to try it I like the “3 steps”!
So sorry – I just saw this comment! I think so – Mom found these at the discount stores. I know they sell Nuby at Babies R Us. The valves are almost all the same on the Nubys. All else fails, there’s Amazon! http://www.amazon.com/Natural-Touch-Sport-Sipper-Colors/dp/B002FXIY9O/ref=sr_1_35?ie=UTF8&qid=1331049196&sr=8-35
